upbeat easy a cappella rep suggestions?

Post by vaarky »

Can folks suggest pieces for an informal performance our ensemble is singing?

We're looking for:
* upbeat (Alice Parker's arrangement of Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal is a good example);
* a cappella
* SATB (divisi workable, esp. in treble, but 4-part is best)
* easy (we have very limited rehearsal time and singers are not strong sight-singers or inclined to put in a lot of extra practice)
* preferably on CPDL
* prefer non-religious text if possible

Ideas I've already passed on:
* Arvo Part, Bogoroditse Dyevo
* Sullivan, When Allen-a-Dale went a-hunting
* Saint-Saenz, Les fleurs
* Fyer, Fyer
* My Bonnie Lass
* Stanford: Quick, we have but a second

Ideas appreciated!

"Which is the Properest Day to Sing" by Thomas Arne seems to be available here. If the venue is appropriate, the original words, "which is the properest day to drink…" (:

Hmmm… you could try my "Rabbits All Around." That's posted here. It's basically a round, so it would come together easily. SAT, though, so I don't know if that would give you range issues for any basses… Feel free to fiddle with chord voicing if you'd like to try it. My "Way Up" is SATB, but not quite as adorably cheery and the harmonies are slightly more difficult. Not too bad though, if you wanted to take a look. How little rehearsal time are we talking?

Sounds like a fun concert!

We're singing at an airport Passers-by would probably not think it inappropriate for us to sing about drinking, though Quick We Have But a Second may hit even closer.

Thanks for the suggestions--I'll pass them along.

Janequin Il estoit une fillette http://www.notamos.co.uk/101198.shtml

Italian dance songs:
Anon La Pastorella http://www.notamos.co.uk/101212.shtml
Festa Quando ritrovo http://www.notamos.co.uk/102171.shtml

Scots folk songs:
Balloo my babe http://www.notamos.co.uk/145294.shtml
Tweed side http://www.notamos.co.uk/145790.shtml
Yellow hair'd laddie http://www.notamos.co.uk/145794.shtml

Misc:
Haringtone Ode to Italian virtuosi http://www.notamos.co.uk/101221.shtml

All links are to free view/playbacks. I think two items have a charge for download, but it is a matter of eorocents. Contact me by e-mail if interested in those and I will short-circuit the charging mechanism.
Given the location, I recommend that you try to obtain a copy of the bible-belt hymn: "Jesus of Nazareth is come to reign, to take me to heaven on his aeroplane"

[Later edit] misremembered all the words of the hymn, except the bare essentials. Yer 'tis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qZDAMW9Pq0

Funny. The "Ode to the memory of Italian virtuosi" is especially upbeat. I'll pass the suggestions along, thanks!
