Re: Allegri Miserere ornamentation

I was in my local sheet music store recently and had a look at their Allegri offerings. There is an edition by Rutter in which he details all the variant readings in previously published versions. In one of the falso bordone sections there is a passing C# that would create the Neapolitan harmony you...

Re: Allegri Miserere ornamentation

I have a recording of an alternative version by A Sei Voci . The divisions were written by a French musicologist whose name I can't remember (I'm not at home to check my CD). Unfortunately, while there is a 'Miserere' sung by A Sei Voci posted on YouTube, it's the track in which they do the 'usual' ...

Basso Continuo: to realize or not to realize?

I'm broaching this possibly sensitive area with some trepidation, but here goes. The trend I have noticed in recent scholarly editions of baroque music involving basso continuo in its various forms (figured bass, unfigured bass, basso seguente etc.) is to leave it alone. That is all very well for sc...

Re: Where is the "Report Error" button?

I don't remember having to do this when I reported an error before, but thanks for clarification.

Re: simple covers for vocal scores

Hi Bruce, This reply is far too late for your needs, but it may help in the future. Years ago I sang in a choir using the selfsame orange Messiah edition. Our solution was simply to paste black construction paper on the covers (we were required to purchase our own copies of the score). The danger wa...

Where is the "Report Error" button?

Hello,

I remember seeing, in the past, a button or link called 'Report Score Error' or something similar that allowed users to identify errors etc. that they found in the scores. I even used it once, myself.

I can't find it anymore. Am I missing something, or is it gone?

Re: Help. How do I add a second PDF file to a Works Page

Thanks, Rob. I had a look at what you did, and it was patently obvious. I'll be able to take care of it myself in future.
More Zielenski coming soon.

Help. How do I add a second PDF file to a Works Page

Hello. I've just added a full score and MIDI file for Zielenski's Elegerunt Apostoli to CPDL. I also uploaded a version that contains only the organ part and want that to appear on the works page with the full score. I don't know how to do this. I'd be happy to try if someone can talk me through it....

Re: Beaming of notes

My decisions of clef choice and beaming style depend on whom I'm preparing the music for. I often find a Renaissance alto part works best in the 8va bassa G2-clef (and in most cases would have been sung by what we might consider a tenor voice anyway). Most female altos I work with are completely flu...

Re: Choice of Clefs and Keys

I must confess that although I do not have perfect pitch, I find that if I am aware that the piece has been transposed from the written key I can have trouble singing it. This happens for two reasons. 1) If, for example, the piece is notated in C and I know that I'm actually singing it in B-flat, I ...

Re: Roman Catholic uses Psalm 13, 70, 100, and 130 in the y

Hi joe_gamba Sorry for such a late reply. I haven't had time to get to the forum in the busy Christmas season. (Two community choirs and a church.) The Common Lectionary was introduced in the 1970s along with the ICEL (International Consulatation on English in the Liturgy, I believe) versions of the...

Re: IMSLP in trouble - who's next?

(From Cdalitz): "It follows that you may never use an edition that has been printed in the last 50 years. It is usually the best to obtain a photocopy from a library holding an extant copy of the first print (which usually requires some knowledge in white mensural notation)." Does anyone k...

Re: Jewish songs

Hi nolinesbarred et al. I direct the Vancouver Jewish Folk Choir here in Canada, and of course, we have goodly amount of Hannukah material (English, Yiddish, Hebrew and Judæo-Spanish) in our repertoire. I'm sorry to say that I only just joined CPDL and it's probably too late to help you for this yea...

Re: n'as-tu point translation

The imagery suggests a fish that is seeking to be caught (lights were often used to attract fish to boats at night)—perhaps an appeal to a lover to 'make a move'. A more scurrilous interpretation of 'Don't you know how to make the snake die?' suggests itself. Crever can mean to burst. I'm not sure a...
