Re: Howells - A Spotless Rose
Well, its public domain in Afghanistan and Ethiopia, since they don't have copyright protections at all. It will only be PD in the US if and only if: a) it was first published before 1923, or b) it was first published between 1923 and 1963 and the copyright was both correctly registered and renewed ...

Re: Monteverdi - Cantate Domino for 2 voices
The main problem with IMSLP's indexing is the practice known as "hit and run" uploading - a contributor will upload a big publication comprising twenty or more works (or sometimes over a hundred!) without providing any information about the contents, other than the title of the volume and ...

Re: R.I.P. Richard Proulx (1937-2010)
A very sad loss, I know a number of people who worked with him on his occasional Australian visits (which were infrequent enough for me to not have had the opportunity to meet him) and were the beneficiaries of his compositions and great humour. Vale, Richard.

Re: Text of Tallis' "Discomfort them, O Lord"
Which motet of Tallis is this a contrafactum of, by the way? (I am completely unfamiliar with the piece.)

Re: Choral Music in Latin Language
I'm fairly sure Guido of Arezzo didn't view the ambiguity of the stave to be an imperfection ;-) As for the translation, it's caused by the subordinate clause being misplaced - surely the sentence should read "Hymn of Praise to the Mother" rather than "Hymn to the Mother of Praise&quo...

Re: are these in public domain ?.
Re: 1. Probably the Bird piece is out of print, however as Presser published it as recently as 1981 I very much doubt they have relinquished all rights to it! The piece doesn't appear to have had the rights transferred to any other publisher, and the copyright claim for the work clearly states Theod...

Re: lohengrin/wedding march in FRENCH???
Why not simply use the one in the French version of the vocal score? Translated by Charles Louis Etienne Nuitter (1828-1899).

Re: are these in public domain ?.
1= Copyright, the composer is still alive! You should purchase this from Theodore Presser: http://www.presser.com/ 2=The original choral work in Ukrainian by Leontovich (†1921) is in the public domain ("Schedryk", 1916), but the best known arrangement has words by Peter Wilhousky © 1936 (&...

Re: Application of musica ficta
To be honest, although I've marked rather a lot of ficta in practice I tend to leave more of the options out. Depending on how badly exposed they are to major key music, some modern singers will often put in raised leading notes anyway quite unwittingly; and any ficta really has to be tested with th...

Re: Application of musica ficta
I agree with Chuck - this is a very thorny subject! The application of accidentals in Brumel's work is often incredibly sparing. For example, in the Missa Et ecce terræ motus , which occupies 120 pages (60 folios) of music, there are only 23 accidentals in total: nine B flats and fourteen B sharps (...

Re: Posting 15 midi files for one work
MIDI practice files are more the preserve of a website like The Silvis Woodshed, rather than CPDL; as Carlos explained the ideal is that MIDI files are an extra resource for a PDF vocal score. At present L'Enfance du Christ is only represented by the well-known L'Adieu des Bergers (in translation) f...

Re: help with transposition
Hi Carlos,
Strange to read it coming from you, Philip. I always thought that one of the main concepts behind CPDL (and IMSLP, where you are an active admin) was exactly to foster cooperation via voluntary work.
It might be related to either becoming a misanthropic grouch in my ...

Re: help with transposition
Perhaps for you, but it was only about five to ten minutes work maximum for me to unwrestle the score to the desired point - which was maybe what I should have done in the first place when I noticed this thread (but I'm not paid to fix other people's problems at present). Sibelius and Finale are bot...

Re: help with transposition
As a long-time Sibelius user this thread eventually piqued my interest, since I’ve found from nearly a decade of experience that you have to go to a considerable amount of effort to stuff up Sibelius’ formatting, since the default settings are usually fairly robust. The formatting of the original Si...

Re: Early Music Scholar's Competition in San Francisco
Hi Vaarky,
Indeed, Vox Patris was edited in the venerable EECM series - and I got to sing it for the first time, just on Monday night two days ago... what a hoot. But it's a bit long to fit with the Ashwell - twenty minutes, when the competition is for a maximum 8-minute-long work!
