Are Dorico files supported?

Post by benwiggy »

As per the title: are Dorico files accepted/supported? They are not in the list of "Preferred" file types on the Upload page.

Now that Finale has ceased, Dorico is one of the main notation apps.

Hi

I'm quite sure that currently CPDL doesn't accept this file format. I was having a look at it and it seems to be just a zip file with the .dorico extension, just like MXL (MusicXML). Fortunately, Dorico is able to export a project in the MusicXML file format, which is an open standard format for exchange of digital sheet music, and the preferred format at CPDL. I would suggest you use it instead.

Best regards

Given that Finale has suspended operations in music engraving and directed its current users (including myself) to Dorico (even with a significant discount on purchase of Dorico as a Finale owner), it seems to me that CPDL actually should set Dorico as an acceptable file type (since it already has Finale, Sibelius, LilyPond, etc. as acceptable file types). This would be a big advantage for Dorico users, even though CPDL recommends compressed MusicXML (.mxl) files for scores. There are inherent problems for many users (of various engraving programs) when they import .mxl files from CPDL (and elsewhere) that sometimes require extensive tweaking and occasionally are simply unusable.

A separate issue, but CPDL seems to be auto-generating XML files from PDFs, and those files need a lot of work to make them usable.

Not autogenerating .mxl files, but one of the admins regularly converts to .mxl from either a previously uploaded engraving program (preferred) or, with sometimes quesitonable results, from pdf scores.

You have been able to upload Dorico files, with appropriate icon, during 2023, as here: https://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/O_d ... y_Purcell) and there: https://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Mat ... _(I:_Alto) for example. What is different today?

The problem is with the upload page which does NOT list .dorico in the "Preferred file types" list.

According to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:A ... _filetypes, we only have to add .dorico file type to $wgFileExtensions.

I'm not sure if I can still log in to the MediaWiki server to make this change. I'll ask Max for the current credentials to access it.

I've provided information via email to you and to Chuck, for obvious reasons of confidentiality.

There are few other things to do, such as adding the Dorico file type to the options of the "Add work" form and, optionally and if needed, add the automatic detection of the file type to associate the corresponding icon when uploading a Dorico file, and add the Dorico MIME type to the information provided by the server to the browser so that the browser can act accordingly. See email for details.

This has been fixed, Dorico is now listed among the preferred file types.

I've implemented this modification, so, when an edition that includes a Dorico file is uploaded, the file type is automatically detected on the basis of the .dorico extension, and the Dorico icon is then automatically included in the wiki code created.
