Monteverdi - Cantate Domino for 2 voices

Post by martha_argerich »

Hello,
I'm searching the 2 voices version of Monteverdi's Cantate Domino. I have already found a version for 6 voices with the same catalogue number (SV 292), but I heard on theese beatiful CD's the two voices version:

- Monteverdi - Duets & solos (Emmy Kirkby & Evelyn Tubb)
http://www.amazon.com/Monteverdi-Duets- ... B0000AL9DH
- Monteverdi - The sacred music vol. 2
http://www.amazon.com/Monteverdi-Sacred ... 161&sr=1-7

I hope somebody can help me found the sheet,
thank you very much for your attention!

Hi, I couldn't find the sheet music itself, but I gathered some information that may help you to locate it. This work was included in a 1615 anthology edited by Giovan Battista Bonometti, Parnassus musicus Ferdinandaeus, in a setting for 2 high voices (sopranos or tenors) and b.c.

This catalogue of Monteverdi works informs that the 2-voice setting is SV 292, while the 6-voice setting is SV 293:

Copies of Parnassus musicus Ferdinandaeus are available in Italy, at libraries located in Bologna, Trento and Verona. However, the on-line library catalogue lists 5 motets by other composers included it in, not this one by Monteverdi. Quite strange.

I had searched for Cantate Domino at IMSLP but forgot to do the same for the Parnassus Musicus; they have it already (not in modern notation, though):

The duet can be found in partbooks Cantus, Tenor and Partitura.

And, as of today, IMSLP have it in modern notation as part of the Malipiero edition of the Complete Works:

There are multiple publications on this page, but Cantate Domino is the first item in the publication entitled "First Section".

Thanks Dave!
I had visited this page, but the "Contents" section at the bottom didn't include the Cantate Domino :(

The main problem with IMSLP's indexing is the practice known as "hit and run" uploading - a contributor will upload a big publication comprising twenty or more works (or sometimes over a hundred!) without providing any information about the contents, other than the title of the volume and a one line description. Recently, the 33 volumes of the Haberl edition of Palestrina went up, so with what seems like little assistance at all (Richard Mix has made a few helpful edits), I've been diligently adding contents to each of those pages and compiling the list of which piece is on which page. In the meantime, other tasks slowly creep to the back-burner. In general, pages without contents listings are particularly awkward for the collections of early music that are being uploaded, since a relatively smaller proportion of IMSLP contributors seem assured or knowledgeable of repertoire say pre-1650.

The paucity or inconsistencies of the Monteverdi pages at IMSLP are partly my fault - although I've added the Stattkus-Verzeichnis to the list of compositions page, I've only gotten through about half the secular music to add contents lists to each individual work page, and hadn't gotten around to any of the big sacred collections (1610, 1638, 1651).

Can you provide further information about how one can find the big sacred collections you mention?

Vaarky, I think Philip was referring to the following collections:

1610: Mass and Vespers of the Blessed Virgin (Messa e Vespro della beata Vergine)
1641: Selva Morale e Spirituale
1650: Mass, Psalms and Litany

They can all be found at the composer's page: http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Monteverdi,_Claudio

Ah, thanks. I thought these were multi-composer collections rather than Monteverdi-specific ones that were listed on his page already (just not specifically listing the works).
