William Denis Browne 1888 - 1915

Post by Forgedglory »

WW1 brought an all too early end to the life of this young composer. Apart from a few songs, the most famous being To Gratiana Dancing and Singing, I'm sure he composed a set of Canticles for Evensong. Does anyone know of these and if they are i print or available from archive?

I don't know whether this is much help, but I see from Grove that all of Denis Browne's manuscripts are collected in the archive at Clare College, Cambridge (http://www.clare.cam.ac.uk/about/archiv ... #cataloges). As you'll see from this page, there is no electronic catalogue (they can't even spell catalogue!), but perhaps the archivist whose contact details are provided could help.

Incidentally, I'm delighted that you've found another notable person from Leamington Spa, a list that also includes composers Robert Simpson and Robin Holloway, boxer Randolph Turpin, magician Aleister Crowley and, er, me.
