I've just been looking at this score, and suddendly I thought I had already heard something quite close to this, and I remembered "Qui ne regrettoit le gentil Févin" by Mouton.
I took my Antico facsimile (Minkoff), and saw that this double canon was indeed exactly the same (excepted that it has 4 voices instead of 8 ) !!
(BTW, I guess this is well known, but I didn't know it)

Fevin died in 1512 ; OTH I've been unable to find when Mouton wrote the "Ave Maria, gemma virginum".
I'm just wondering : did he extract some part of his Ave Maria to write quickly something after Févin's death, or did he first wrote the Févin piece, and later realized that he could write a much richer canon ?
