Choral Settings of texts by Gerard Manley Hopkins

Post by SIR » 03 Dec 2009 01:15

Upcoming Celebrations at Regis & Gonzaga stimulate this inquiry: I'd like references to songs and choruses based upon JMH poetry.
Any lists or integral recordings also welcomed.
Thanks.

I asked Helene Whitson of the San Francisco Bay Area Choral Archive (Sig, I think John H knows her). Here's her reply--hope it helps.
Kirke Mechem set Pied Beauty as part of his 5-piece work, Children of David.
I think the old San Francisco Civic Chorale premiered that in the late
1970s, early 1980s. I know, because I sang it. I think I have both the
score and our recording. Kirke certainly would have a copy.

Dede Duson has done a setting for SSA. You can check on Sheet Music Plus.

Jacob Druckman did a setting of Glory be to god for dappled things, as part
of his Antiphonies I.

Aron Aric Hagen has set Pied Beauty as part of We're All Here.

Thomas Lloyd set Pied Beauty for the inauguration of Jane McAuliffe as
President or Bryn Mawr College, 2008. Someone could call her office.

Libby Larsen set Pied Beauty as one section of her Missa Gaia. I have a
score and recording for that.

Two recordings on amazon:

An evening with Gerard Manly Hopkins
Paul Sperry Sings An American Sampler

Hope this isn't too late for you - -

The Library of Congress lists a bunch, including choral and song settings by Babbitt, Barber ("God's Grandeur" and "Heaven-Haven") Britten ("A.M.D.G."), Krenek, Mathias, Pinkham, Rubbra, as well as other less-known composers, along with some recordings.

[Go to the LOC catalog (catalog.loc.gov) and enter "Hopkins, Gerard Manley musical settings" as a subject keyword.]
