Re: George Dyson Evening Service in D

Dyson died in 1964, so his work is still in copyright in the UK and EU. 1907 is the right date for the Service in D according to Grove, so it may be in the public domain in the USA - provided the copyright hasn't been renewed it almost certainly will be, since it was composed before 1923. It might b...

Re: Mozart Vesperea solennes do confessore - laudate pueri

I should say your guess was about 112 too many. The setting is a very close-worked single-subject fugue. You might want to count the countersubject as a separate theme, as you might the brief homophonic interlude at Et humilia respicit . It seems like a rather unusual query, if you don't mind my say...

Re: Tracking Favorites or Ratings

If contributors adopt the excellent idea of including information on sources in all editions, doesn't this mean there will have to be some careful scrutiny of all newly uploaded scores to ensure the source is in the PD? For example, if someone contributed an Eton Choirbook edition and listed the sou...

Re: Tracking Favorites or Ratings

There are of course already ways of leaving feedback - by a note on the contributor's Talk page, although that isn't visible unless you take the trouble to go looking for it, and isn't automatically linked to any particular editions, or on the discussion tab of a particular work's page. I feel that ...

Re: Choice of Clefs and Keys

I'm second to none in my admiration for Fellowes - his industry and enthusiasm in rediscovering and making available the work of Tudor composers were phenomenal. If it were not for him, we probably wouldn't be having this discussion as we wouldn't even have heard of Byrd. However, his editions are s...

Re: Choice of Clefs and Keys

As the editor of the edition in question, I'm not sure there is a "practical" solution to providing an edition of this piece. As Chuck says, a range from d to c'' is hardly kind to any human voice. My choice was based on the consideration that all the altos I know, even those with professi...

Re: Poor is the life (Michael East)

No, Brian's edition is actually What is our life? by Gibbons, which is also where the text comes from on the Poor is the life page. Since I can't find Poor is the life on Brian's site, I'll delete the link and correct the text. No chance to ask Brian, unfortunately, as the poor fellow died a couple ...

Re: Song Translation

Debbie, It might be polite to try to contact Burkhart Schürmann to check that he's happy for you to put English words to his arrangement. You could drop a note onto his user page at http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/User_talk:Burkhart_M._Sch%C3%BCrmann to ask him, although since the only other ques...

Re: music by Bessarabov

Brendan, Can't find this one anywhere online. If it's any use, Boris Tarakanov's site has a different piece by Bessarabov - Troparion of the Dormition. It's on the page http://notes.tarakanov.net/composers/b.htm - search for Бессарабов in the list of composers if your Cyrillic is as un-fluent as min...

Re: Roman Catholic uses Psalm 13, 70, 100, and 130 in the y

Joe, Complete uses of these psalms, such as I can find in the Breviary, and to give them their Roman numbers: Psalm 12 - Usquequo Domine - Not much variety of liturgical use for this one. Proper to Tuesday Compline throughout the year. Psalm 69 - Deus in adjutorium - Proper to Thursday Compline thro...

Re: Roman Catholic uses Psalm 13, 70, 100, and 130 in the y

Joe, Before I (or anyone else) do any research on this one, can you say exactly which psalms it is you have setting of, since there are different numbering schemes in use? For example, in the Roman psalter, Psalm 100 is Misericordiam et judicium (My song shall be of mercy and judgement) whereas in t...

Re: Inquiry regarding a Renaissance choral work

The only recording of an "Illumina oculos" by Palestrina I can find is at http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=64893 , although there is no indication whether this is the 5- or the 3-part setting, and $38 might be a bit too much to pay just to find out. The 1997 release d...

Re: Wrong Haydn for Requiem in c

Oh, how annoying - hope it didn't cause you too much work. My assumption that both works were "The" Michael Haydn Requiem was obviously unfounded.
