Re: Variant versions of Byrd (or anyone else)

Thanks both - good to talk to you both again. I've uploaded the first edition and parts ( How shall a young man ), but left the page in a bit of a mess at the moment - don't have any good ideas about how to reflect the different categories of genre and instrumentation in a tidily-formatted way. I'll...

Variant versions of Byrd (or anyone else)

Hello, everyone - hope all's well here (I'm sure it is). I haven't been doing much by way of editing for a few years, hence lack of activity here - but Byrd calls again. I've had a few requests recently for viol parts or editions in their (original?) voice-and-viols scoring, so thought I would post ...

Online course on mensural notation

Just recently found this: http://diamm.nsms.ox.ac.uk/moodle/ via a link on the Resources page of DIAMM. It's a course on reading and interpreting mensural notation, concentrating on French 14th-century repertoire, but explaining principles that apply right down to the early Tudor period in England. ...

Re: CPDL in the news

Yes, it was good, wasn't it, but the recommendation of CPDL made no mention of Byrd in particular, certainly not of me. So feathers in caps all round.

Re: CPDL in the news

Not "the news" as such, but it's good to see CPDL getting a credit as a source of "good-quality free downloadable PDF scores" in Kerry McCarthy's forthcoming volume on Byrd (buy, buy, when it appears!) in the Master Musicians series.

Re: Mensural notation oddity

It sounds like a divisi to me, but can you give us a reference to a particular page? - there are 16 (!) choirbooks containing music by Lassus in the Bavarian State Library, and none of the ones I've looked at contain the feature in question. You can even give the URL of a particular page, e.g. http:...

Re: Binchois and Anonymous

I would be slightly concerned (others may disagree) about the legality of simply copying modern editions of the two masses, given the amount of (modern) editorial work that has gone into creating them. The Barcelona mass, for example, is incomplete in its Tenor part, so any modern edition will inclu...

Re: Basic instinct

Thank you for the heads-up regarding that, er, feast of music. Somewhere recently on this forum there was a request from someone wanting food-related music, so I hope he's also reading this. One good feature of the IMSLP uploads is that the uploader has split off the index, so that you can see what ...

Re: Lyricists known only unto God

I suppose my doubts centre around the notion of probability: if we were considering an anonymous lyric set by Byrd, for example, and it was the case that 90% of Byrd's texts were known to be written by him (or even 51%), then we would be justified in saying that an unknown one was "probably&quo...

Re: Lyricists known only unto God

To return to the original premise, this template would be used where composers "are thought" to have provided their own texts. But thought by whom? I would wish to argue that the example of the English madrigalists is unhelpful since, as far as I'm aware, very few if any of them are though...

Early Music Online

In case no-one else has discovered this one, http://www.earlymusiconline.org/ is worth a look - self-explanatory when you get there. It looks to be doing for early printed volumes what DIAMM has done for manuscripts (and with luck will make new content available a bit more quickly  )

Re: 3-part sacred anthems

I'm sure there's a good reason for your wanting 3-part pieces, but you seem to have all 4 parts covered - could your singers not manage some of the easier 4-part anthems? That would extend your choice enormously.

Thanks to Google Translate the title means "Easter Sequence". Since Andris Solims is both contributor and part-composer, I wonder if he would know about recordings?

Re: George Dyson Evening Service in D

Probably the best idea, Max. I should have said, of course, that provided the work was published in the US before 1923 then it should be PD.
